The ID.3 is part of a new generation of all-electric hatchbacks that are compact enough for parking in the city, yet spacious enough for family trips. Overhangs are short, the wheelbase elongated, as the front no longer has to accommodate a hefty engine and cooling system, and a long wheelbase enhances ride quality.
Located in the dash, the 10-inch touchscreen display is a comfortable height for easy access for both driver and passenger. It’s not the only element of advanced tech in the ID.3. Each model also features a digital pod behind the steering wheel, with a small-but-clear 5.3-inch display that shows speed, range and sat-nav instructions.
Offering three driving modes, Eco, Comfort and Sport, each has its own unique quirks. Comfort is a highlight, offering lighter steering, but retaining a sharpness, thanks to the rear-wheel drive layout that allows more steering angle to be packaged up front. The rear-wheel drive, teamed with plenty of torque, also gives you ultra-responsive acceleration.
The ID.3 connects you with your vehicle like never before. It recognises you when you approach the vehicle with the key, courtesy of optional ‘Keyless Advanced’ locking and starting system. Driving in certain weather conditions has been considered too, with electrically heated door mirrors and automatic dimming function on driver’s side.
With ample passenger space and a windscreen that’s much closer to the front of the car, letting in more light, the ID.3 is perfect for families. Its impressive 385-litre boot space provides a comfortable fit for two large suitcases and a travel case. Fold the seats down and you’ve got yourself over 1,000 litres of storage space.
Open the charging flap and attach the charging cable to start recharging a VW ID.3. Lock the car to secure it and wait for it to recharge. Once finished, all you need to do is unlock the ID.3 and remove the cable, then you can continue your trip.
