The phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” certainly applies to the look of the quirky Fiat 500. However, these are electric hatchbacks reimagined, with a longer, wider appearance and the addition of an all-glass roof to let in more light. This mini-SUV still retains the same retro fifties charm that has been attracting drivers to the Fiat for generations.
The generous 10.25-inch touchscreen display is wirelessly compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with mirroring so you can see your smartphone apps right on screen. A responsive 7-inch digital dial display replaces the more familiar manual dial controls and the interface is fast and easy to use.
The Fiat 500e comes with three driving modes – Normal, Range and Sherpa. Range is ideal for urban driving, recharging the battery as you drive and with regenerative braking for smooth, one-pedal driving. Sherpa conserves energy and reduces maximum speed, giving you extra time to make it to the next charge point. Instant acceleration makes the car seem faster than it is.
Adaptive cruise control keeps you at safe distances when driving on the motorway, while automatic emergency braking will spot any cyclists or pedestrians that cross you path in the inner city. The funky modern interior has no central tunnel, creating way more space and comfort than you might expect from the outside.
As a small city car, the Fiat 500e boasts an impressive amount of space for both passengers and luggage. Innovative interior design groups physical controls neatly together and a large tray with wireless charging is provided for your phone. The boot capacity reaches 550 litres with the rear seats folded down – enough for four large suitcases.
To charge up the 500e, simply plug in the charging cable to the charging inlet and lock the car to secure the cable and start the charge. When you want to unplug, just unlock the 500e and remove the cable.
