Driving in and around Aberdeen

The whole of Scotland is full of incredible views to see when driving around, and Aberdeen is no exception. The roads are well maintained around the city, but it’s always worth exercising caution when driving in harsh conditions or heavy snow.

Aberdeen is well connected by road. The main arterial road is the A90, which connects Aberdeen to Peterhead and Fraserburgh in the north and Dundee, Brechin, Perth and Edinburgh in the south. The A96 will take you northwest to the likes of Inverness and Elgin, while the A93 will take you to the stunning Cairngorms mountains. The A944 takes you west towards Alford.

If you’re heading into the city, you’ll find the motorways operating 70mph speed limits. Many nearby towns and cities have speed limits of 30mph - although this can vary so always check the speed limit of the roads you’re driving along. Like the rest of the UK, Scotland drives on the left and seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers.

Driving in and around Aberdeen’s city centre is relatively simple. Although, like most major cities around the country, it can become congested during peak hours. So, if you’re planning to pick up and drop off some heavy items in the middle of Aberdeen itself and want to do so with a little peace and quiet, you would do well to try and avoid rush hour traffic. This is usually between 7.30am - 9.30am and 4pm - 6.30pm.

You’ll find Costco just off the A944 and B&Q off Garthdee Road - although, there are quite a few in peppered across the city.

Hiring a van in Aberdeen really does gift you complete freedom to drive around the area entirely at your leisure, doing whatever it is you need to do. With us, it’s quick, it’s easy and you’ll be on the road in no time.

Plus, if you have some extra time while driving around the area, you can visit sights such as Balmoral Castle or venture further to the coast.
