The newly renovated York Art Gallery is one of the best places in northern England to see art that ranges from the traditional to the contemporary. Visit the York Art Gallery to enjoy its permanent collection of more than 1,000 paintings, including works by Turner, and more than 3,000 ceramic items, with many pieces from local Yorkshire potteries. The highlight, however, is the world's biggest collection of British handmade studio pottery, and this includes work by the renowned potter Bernard Leach. The gallery is housed within a grand purpose-built 19th-century building. Inside, you'll also find an atmospheric cafe with great views of York Minster.
