Even the most recreational Londoner tends to keep outdoor activities to a minimum during the cold snap, but with so much scope for fun there's really no need to hibernate this winter. Winter sports
Located in the heart of London, the 18th centurySomerset Houseis 'thee' place to ice-skate in the capital. A spacious 900 squaremetre outdoor rink, installed each winter in thebuilding's decorativeneoclassical courtyard, is enough to make anybody bust out their best 'Torvill and Dean' moves.
For those wanting something a little more challenging, then why nottry your best snow plough at theBromley Ski & Snowboard Centre, an hour's drive from the centre of London.
Twitching
Believe it or not, urban birdwatching has 'taken off', and central London is proving a safe haven for some of the UK's struggling species. Regent's Park, located north of some of the city's busiest shopping districts, is home to over 200 species of birds, including tawny owls, kestrels and green woodpeckers.
For those wanting to 'twitch' in a more serene environment, head to the Wildlife Trust's Colne Point Nature Reserve in North Essex - one of the best birdwatching spots in the UK, particularly for migratory species such as finches, skylarks, chats, pipits and raptors.
Watersports
For some 'oar-some' adventures head to the West Reservoir Centre in Stoke Newington where you can sail and kayak. Once you have mastered the water you might like to test your mettle at the award-winning Lee ValleyPark - a green 'lung' between London and Hertfordshire, where you can take it up a notch with a spot of white water rafting.
Walking
Londoner's as a whole tend to be big into walking, even if it is more out of necessity rather than choice. But why not put your best foot forward and clear your headat some of the incredible walking hotspots located outside the city, such as the South Downs National Park or Dartmoor.
