For families wanting like to learn more about the history of the city, Bestwood Winding Engine House lets you discover all about Nottingham's mining days. At one time it was part of the iron and coal company of the same name, but was turned into a free-to-visit country park when the mine closed in 1971. Nowadays, it is open all year round and features the only remaining two cylinder vertical winding engine in the UK - which is currently undergoing restoration courtesy of the Bestwood Colliery Winding House Volunteers. With stunning scenery and fascinating history, Bestwood Winding Engine House is one of Nottingham’s treasures.
