Since arriving in Newcastle in 1998, the Angel of the North sculpture by Antony Gormley has become a firm favourite with residents and visitors alike. Located on the site of a former coal mine at Gateshead, the steel statue is 20 metres tall and depicts a winged angel looking over the city. Such is its iconic status, more than 150,000 visitors make the pilgrimage each year to see it – and be photographed alongside it. Gormley has stated that he chose an angel to represent the miners who toiled there, as well as the hopes for the future, and the Angel of the North is a sight you won't want to miss when you visit.
