Founded by a collective of Mancunians keen to boost the city's status as an educated and cultured centre, Manchester Art Gallery was opened in 1824 and has grown to occupy two neighbouring buildings in the city centre. The gallery owns almost 13,000 individual works including paintings and sculptures, plus an extensive range of ceramics, arms and armour. Best known for its Victorian collection, the gallery has perhaps the most recognised piece created by Ford Madox Brown also onsite. Visitors to Manchester Art Gallery can expect a good dose of culture no matter what happens to be on display during their visit.
