If you're planning a trip to Niagara Falls, you are in for a once in a lifetime opportunity. It's one of the most breath-taking sights the world has to offer, making it massively popular with tourists. The fact that it sits on the America-Canada border is a huge bonus, as you can team a holiday with the country of your choosing. It's easy to believe that visiting Niagara is quite straightforward - you see the spectacular Falls and that's it, surely? But there really is so much you can do to really take in this wonder of the world.

So to ensure you make the most of Niagara Falls, here are five must-do activities for your excursion.

Maid of the Mist

By far the most famous activity available, this voyage on a coal-powered steamboat takes you across the base of the Falls. It's the best way to experience them up close - you'll feel the mist on your face, hear the deafening roar of 600,000 gallons of falling water, and witness the true expanse of this natural wonder. A poncho is an absolutely must but, fear not, as these are kindly provided. Visit their website for more information.

Journey behind the Falls

See the Falls from the same height but from a very different angle indeed. With this excursion, you can view the cascade of water from behind. It starts in an elevator ride where you can enjoy looking at the Canadian Horseshoe Falls (the most iconic section) and the Niagara River, and from there you explore the caverns for a unique behind-the-scenes experience.

Skylon Tower

This building offers views of Niagara Falls and the city itself from 235 metres high. It has indoor and outdoor observation centres, as well as two restaurants. The Revolving Dining Room is highly recommended for an unforgettable dining experience.

Whirlpool Aero Car

If you love a ride in a cable car, this option is for you. In continuous operation since 1916, it's suspended above the waters of the Whirlpool Rapids. Enjoy a ten-minute trip over this section of the Niagara River.

Niagara Parkway

This is a scenic drive running from Niagara-on-the-Lake, past the Falls to Fort Erie and following the gorge. It's a beautiful stretch of road, surrounded by parks and offers lots of things to do along the way. One of the more popular pit stops is the Butterfly Conservatory, which is home to over 2,000 free-flying butterflies.
