Standing over 50 metres tall in London's Trafalgar Square, Nelson's Column was built in the 1840s as a memorial to one of England's most formidable leaders, Admiral Horatio Nelson. Designed by E.H. Baily, a sandstone statue of Nelson stands atop a Corinthian column and faces south towards The English Channel, gazing down at the lands he helped to protect from French forces during the Napoleonic Wars. Four cast bronze panels on each side of the column depict his most famous naval victories, while four bronze lions stand at the base to guard and protect Nelson.
