In terms of pageantry and tradition, Changing the Guard is one of the most colourful spectacles you are ever likely to see. Visitors can watch the ritual unfold any day of the week between April and July, and at other times of the year on alternate odd days. What you will see during the formality, also called Guard Mounting, are highly trained soldiers from The Queen's Guard handing over the responsibility of protecting the Sovereign to the New Guard - who will have marched there from nearby Wellington Barracks. Depending on the corps there may be drummers or pipers, and all will be wearing the iconic crisp red uniform and tall black bearskin cap. It is a fascinating ceremony that dates back 700 years to King Henry VII's reign.
