The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, to give it its full title, is a breath-taking landmark in the city. If you visit, you'll discover an extraordinary modern Roman Catholic building made of Portland stone, marble and aluminium. The Metropolitan Cathedral opened in 1967 and features an unusual circular conical design, with the altar in the middle. Witty locals call the eye-catching church the ‘wigwam' or the ‘Mersey Funnel'. Visitors should look out for the acclaimed modern stained glass windows and statues inside the vast nave. And under the Metropolitan Cathedral you can also visit the crypt, which was started in 1933 and completed ten years before the main structure.
