The Marks & Spencer store chain originally started in Leeds as a humble market stall in 1884. If you visit the Marks in Time exhibition in the city you'll be able follow the amazing story of this world-famous shopping name. It's a free interactive gallery telling how the business grew from a penny bazaar stall to a global brand. At Marks in Time you'll discover all sorts of fascinating stories from its history - ranging from boardroom battles to the role of pants. Learn how M&S helped the government work out its rationing policy during the war and how the store introduced avocado pears to Britain, but found customers were serving them as desserts with custard.
