Inverness

One of Scotland's biggest and most famous attractions is completely free to visit. You can discover the moody atmosphere of Loch Ness simply by walking or driving along the shore. Of course, everyone has a view about the iconic monster. There are plenty of entertaining Nessie souvenir shops and Monster 'visitor centres' to explore but, even if you are very sceptical, it's hard not to scan the Loch every so often, just in case. Don't let Nessie distract you too much though: the 23-mile long Loch can simply be enjoyed as a natural beauty spot bordered by picturesque villages and the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle.
