Inverness

High on the hills a few miles to the west of the Highland city of Inverness, you'll find the forested ridge of Craig Phadrig. The 500ft climb makes a bracing scenic walk but it's worth it for the views. You can see right across Inverness, the Beauly Firth and the mouth of the River Ness. The site is in the care of the Forestry Commission, and if you visit the summit of Craig Phadrig, you'll find the remains of a hill fort. The impressive stone remains are believed to be the stronghold of the powerful 6th- century Pictish King Bridei mac Maelchon.
