Almost halfway between Stockholm and Malmö, along Sweden's southeastern coastline, Västervik stands a mile east of the main E22 coastal route. It is very much a seafaring town surrounded by inlets, islands and watery landscapes. The rocks and waterways around here are a renowned location for fishing. Anglers from all over Europe are attracted to fish around Västervik, for pike, trout and perch in particular. The area's granite cliffs are also an internationally renowned venue for the new sport of bouldering.
The harbour is the heart of the Västervik community and much of the city spreads west from there. The old whitewashed church of St Gertrud is a local landmark although the sight you'll spot from all over the town is the FM mast on the outskirts. It's one of Sweden's highest structures. Hire a car from Västervik to find all the other attractions like the climbing centre, golf club and fishing boat trips. It has certainly become a centre of outdoor activities, with yachts people and canoeists joining climbers and fishermen in the many waterside bars and restaurants.
