Hertz at Karlskrona

If you are traveling to Karlskrona in south-eastern Sweden it's particularly handy to arrive by rail. That's because the Central Station is situated right in the heart of the city, on the island of Trossö. The station itself is a grand period building facing a square now taken up with parking spaces. If you pick up a hire car at Karlskrona station you'll see that the city centre is just a few hundred yards to the south. Karlskrona is spread across 30 islands but the station and city centre are on the same island. From the front of the station, however, the main R28 road leads back to the mainland too.

The historic naval base on Trossö is so well-preserved it has been designated a World Heritage Site. If you have a hire car it's easy to explore the various islands of Karlskrona using the network of bridges. The location is spectacular and some of the city's sights are pretty good too: the big maritime museum has hundreds of boats, models and relics to see, while the island of Dragsö is good for spotting little wooden houses and beaches. For more of an adventure, take a ferry to the rugged island of Aspö with its beaches and old fortifications.
