Karlskrona is a maritime and military city spread across 33 islands at the southwest tip of Sweden. It forms part of the Blekinge Archipelago and bridges and causeways link some of the islands, while ferries link others. Other ferries connect Sweden to Poland. Visitors who hire a car in Karlskrona can explore this watery landscape of rocky islands, waterfronts, forested shorelines and family-friendly beaches. Inland, you can drive to the best nature trails and barbecue picnic areas around the Alljungen lakes or to the romantically ruined castle at Lyckeby. And if you choose one ferry, take the free boat to the quiet island of Aspo to see the little village and old military citadel.
Much of the city dates from the 18th century so there's a uniform baroque style to the architecture that is unique in Sweden. The streets follow the original grid pattern and most historic parts of Karlskrona have been declared a World Heritage site. If you rent a car in Karlskrona you can discover the highlights of the city. The harbour and waterfront are lined with restaurants and bars and the old main square is the largest in Scandinavia. The main attractions however are the restored buildings of the old Swedish naval base and the National Naval Museum on the island of Stumholmen, which includes exciting ship simulators and costumed guides.
