The town of Gällivare is found in the Norrbotten County, which is a province of Lapland, in the country of Sweden. The town is most famous for its skiing and hiring a car from Gällivare lets you travel to just outside of the town to the ski resort of Dundret. Gällivare has hosted World Cup skiing events on numerous occasions, including both alpine and cross country skiing. Check when you plan your trip for the best time to take advantage of the slopes, the ski season runs from October to May for the best conditions. The town is also well known for having one of the largest copper mines in Europe.
Rent a car in Gällivare and visit the Gällivare Museum which has a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions. It is home to the miner's art collection which features 120 pieces of art that were donated during the miner's strike in 1969. Travel just under an hour's south of the town to Purnu and join an educational tour into the corral. Here you can learn all about the forest Sami culture, and of course the reindeer, you will even get the chance to help your tour guide to feed them. It's a long excursion at three and a half hours but well worth it to learn some more about the area.
