The south-eastern city of Fredrikstad stands on the eastern side of the mouth of the Oslo Fjord and Norway’s biggest river, the Glomma. It’s 6 miles south of the Norwegian capital and only ten miles from the Swedish border. The surrounding area is ripe to be explored by visitors who hire a car in Frerikstad. It’s an appealing mix of fjords, inlets, islands and coastline dotted with prehistoric stone circles, carvings and burial mounds. Further afield, you can take day trips to see the attractions of Oslo, or venture into the islands off Fredrikstad, including Kråkerøy with its 1-year-old church and bathing beaches and the smoothed granite and pretty cottages of Vesterøy.
