Located in the north of the Netherlands, in the Friesland province, Heerenveen is a fascinating town. Where seventeen magnificent windmills used to surround it, there is now only one, known as Welgelegen, however the town has other attractions too.
By hiring a car in Heerenveen, visitors can avoid public transportation, seeing and doing everything they wish on their own schedules, when they want to. By car, you can also travel outside of the town and explore the wider province of Friesland, which is known for its natural beauty, stunning vistas, and excellent towns and cities.
A particular highlight of a visit to Heerenveen is the brilliant Welgeleden mill, which is the last remaining mill of seventeen which originally stood around the town. It is only open to the public on Saturdays, so on the rare chance that you can go inside and take a look, you should take it. Otherwise, it is great to simply drive over to the mill and walk around the exterior.
Hiring a car in Heerenveen means that the mill is easy to travel to by road, avoiding any delays in public transportation and allowing you to spend the rest of the day exploring the wider area.
A great place to go to for a day trip outside of Heerenveen is Leeuwarden, which is just under half an hour north of the town. Leeuwarden is the capital city of the province of Friesland, and is home to the Oldehove, which is a leaning tower which has to be seen to be believed. The city is home to both the largest cattle market in the Netherlands, as well as the largest flower market. For those who like to spot old buildings, Leeuwarden is a perfect place to do so, with its brilliant historic centre filled with great examples of Dutch architecture.
