Emmeloord is the administrative centre of the reclaimed lands in the northeast Netherlands known as Noordoostpolder – which translates as ‘north east polder’ referring to the location of some of the country’s largest surface area of land reclaimed from the sea, thus keeping it populated to the tune of some 25,000 residents. Hire a car in Emmeloord and you’ll be able to visit the circle of villages which cropped up around the town in order to discover the key sites which have made the region one of the elite UNESCO World Heritage sites due to its agricultural and natural significance.
