If you travel to Pompeii by train you'll probably arrive at Scavi Station, sometimes called by its full name Pompeii Scavi – Villa dei Misteri. This is the main visitor station for the ancient ruins on the Naples–Sorrento line known as the Circumvesuviana. The small Scavi Station stands in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a few hundred yards from the main entrance to the archaeological site on Via Roma. If you hire a car from Pompeii Railway Station you can easily visit the Pompeii archaeological site and the rest of the town, as well as nearby Herculaneum and the long list of other attractions in the area.
Visitors who hire a car in Pompeii have the advantage of being able to tour the modern city as well as the ancient one. Of course, the remains of the city destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvius 2,000 years ago are the prime attraction and a World Heritage Site but try to visit the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rosary, an important pilgrimage site too. If you hire a car from Pompeii Railway Station you can also visit Mount Vesuvius itself, the similar ruins at Herculaneum (Ercolano), the elegant resort of Sorrento, the lively city of Naples and the famous villages of the Amalfi coast. You could even catch a boat trip to Ischia or Capri.
