Gorizia sits at the foot of the Julian Alps on the border of Slovenia, in the north east of Italy. The town is overlooked by the Gorizia Castle which sits atop a hill in the town centre. The castle, built in the 11th century, was demolished in the First World War but was restored between 1934 and 1937.
