Cagliari Airport is just over a 10km drive from the city centre. From the airport, take the SS-391 before heading south on the SS-131. Continue onto the Via Gabriello Chiabrera, and you will find yourself in the very beating heart of Cagliari city centre. The SS-131 will also take you away from the city should you stay on it and into the island’s heartlands.
When driving, you should carry your driving licence and passport with you at all times, as you are required to show this in the event of spot checks by the Polizia di Stato. As with most of mainland Europe, you are required to drive on the right hand side of the road.
If you’re passing through any local towns and villages, it’s worth noting that the horn may only be used in the event of an emergency.
Seatbelts must be worn by the driver and any passengers, front or back, at all times. Speed restrictions are tightly enforced in Sardinia. In the event of adverse weather, these restrictions are reduced by 20 km/h. Keep an eye out for speed limit signs.
It’s recommended that any children under the age of 13 are seated in the back. Further advice, if needed, can be obtained from our agents at the helpdesk.
Located just beneath Corsica, Sardinia is a stunning Mediterranean island. Whether it’s the sandy beaches, gorgeous landscapes or famous landmarks that you love, the wider Cagliari area is the ideal place to take your south European vacation.
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria is the crowning glory of the Piazza Palazzo in central Cagliari. Originally built in the 13th century, it’s only the bell tower remains from the original gothic centrepiece. Most of the remaining structure was rebuilt in the 1930s, but is faithful to the Romanesque original. The ceiling frescoes, as well as the side chapels, are a sight to behold.
The baroque Cappella di San Michele, which houses a sculpture of St Michael casting devils into Hell, is perhaps the Cattedrale’s finest feature. As well as this piece, the chapel has two stone pulpits originally created by Guglielmo da Pisa in the 12th Century. They initially formed two pieces and were housed elsewhere, until being split and relocated to the site in the 1600s. The underground rooms are also well worth a visit, particularly the Santuario dei Martiri, which features a number of delightful carvings.
Poetto beach is a short drive from the city centre. This fine, sandy beach spans a whopping seven km. The Sella del Diavola is a hotspot for Sardinia’s locals. In the Summer, they visit here en masse, sampling the delights of the green’s restaurants and bars.
If you’re looking for a little more action, try out the many water sports on offer. From wakeboarding to windsurfing, you can test your aquatic skills with the best of them. Whether you plan on embarking on a coastal walk, or just want to sunbathe and swim, Poetto beach has it all.
The Mercato di San Benedetto trades everyday (except Sunday), from 7am to 2pm. This magical morning market is a Mediterranean delight, featuring some of the finest food that the region has to offer. From fish to meat to fruit and vegetables – not to mention an almost endless supply of tasty local cheeses – you can pick up whatever you fancy from the mercato. But make sure that you give yourself plenty of time. Popular with tourists and locals alike, it can get very busy indeed...
