The small town of Saudarkrokur stands at the head of the Skagafjordur fjord in northern Iceland. Iceland's main arterial road, Route One, passes just to the south of town; visitors who hire a car in Saudarkrokur can reach the island ring road easily. Iceland's capital Reykjavik is 28 miles south. Attractions of the surrounding area include the Tindastóll skiing area, with slopes and ski lift, and Krokurinn, where you'll find a golf course. There's a paintball operator just south of the town and in the summer boat trips can take visitors to Drangey Island in the fjord, the steep-sided remains of a prehistoric volcano that now has huge bird colonies.
Saudarkrokur has grown up around its fishing harbour at the mouth of the Sauda River but is now served by its own airport, which lies on flat land at the river mouth just to the east of the town. All the flights from here head to Reykavik. If you rent a car in Saudarkrokur you'll easily find all the attractions, including the town museum, sports centre and horse-riding complex. Locals can point you in the direction of geo-thermal pools to bathe in or the town's open-air naturally heated swimming pool, which also offers saunas and hot spa pools too.
