It's just a small village in north-eastern Iceland but Thorshofn, (or Þórshöfn in Icelandic), has its own domestic airport. In fact, this is Thorshofn's newer airport; the old one was three miles to the north but has been closed because the facilities were inadequate. If you pick up a hire car at the new Thorshofn airport, you'll find it is a fairly humble facility on flat tree-less land right next to the seashore. There's a tiny terminal building and car park but the Laugarnesvegur road leads straight to the village, which is about a mile to the south.
If you drive your hire car down into the village of Thorshofn, you'll find it's a small modern fishing community with a natural harbour overlooking Thistilfjördur. There's a wild frontier feel to this remote featureless landscape. You'll find that less than 400 people live here but it does attract tourists all year round. Thorshofn has become a centre for exploring the sparsely-populated Langanes Peninsula where there are large colonies of eider ducks, whose feathers are collected and sold by locals. Other attractions are the salmon fishing rivers nearby and the sheer rock sea cliffs to the north.
With a wide range of travellers passing through our locations every day, we've got a wide range of vehicles on offer to suit your needs - from smart executive saloons to compact family hatchbacks. ***
