Wuppertal is in the Wupper valley, but the Wupper river. It is an unusual German city because of its linear layout, which is dictated by the steep slopes of the valley. It is close to Düsseldorf, and it was here in 1897 that Aspirin was invented. The European Institute for International Relations is based in Wuppertal, as is the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. Wuppertal is the home of the only suspended monorail, the Wuppertaller Schwebebahn. It was built in 1901, and the tracks are suspended 26 feet above the city streets.
