Wittenberg will be a familiar name to any students of history, due to its close connections with Martin Luther who lived and taught here in the 16th century. The spires of the Castle Church (All Saints Church) dominate the city's skyline, and it was on these doors that Luther pinned his Ninety-Five Theses – the beginning of the Protestant Revolution.
If you plan on staying in the city for a while and fancy a road trip, you should rent a car from Wittenberg and make a daytrip to the fairy-tale Harz Mountains via the scenic B6 road west. At approximately a two hour journey, it'll give you chance to explore wider Wittenberg.
Visitors often head straight for the town square. You can locate the square by the towers of the All Saints Church which are prominent Wittenberg's horizon, and notice the quaint pastel coloured buildings on the way. When staying in Wittenberg you're only a short drive away from Dessau – a neighbouring riverside city which provides a marked contrast to the quaint cityscape of Wittenberg. Hiring a car from Wittenberg also means the mystical Harz Mountains are just a daytrip away. For a blast of modernity, tourists should visit the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in nearby Dessau. At the Foundation you'll learn all about the German heritage of architecture and design.
