Starnberg, located in the south-east German state of Bavaria is a city only 3km south-west of Munich and one of the wealthiest in Germany. It was first mentioned in 1226, although back then it went by the name of Aheim am Würmsee.
Starnberg is famous for its lakes, of which there are five and the beautiful buildings that have grown up alongside them. These lakes were formed during the last ice age, giving them great historic and geographic significance, so it's well worth hiring a car in Starnberg to take a trip out and experience the beautiful scenery.
Starnberg has many sights to see, but one of the most impressive has to be Starnberg Castle and its magnificent garden. The castle isn't what you''d imagine when picturing a typical German castle - it isn't fancy or gothic, but is a large rectangular white building that sits well in the landscape.
Starnberg's lakes are the real jewel in its crown - each of these five magnificent bodies of water gives the region its more common name of Fünf-Seen-Land (Land of Five Lakes.) If the countryside isn't your thing, hire a car in Starnberg and head into Münich, which is under an hour away.
