Rosenheim is almost older than the hills – the Romans established a military base here in around 15AD, but they were by no means the first people to settle in the area, as it has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The landscape itself was formed by a glacier, and you can still see the shoreline of a lake that vanished over 10,000 years ago. Rosenheim Castle predates 1234, while one of the original medieval gates of the market town from the Middle Ages still stands today. Being only 52km from Munich, it’s easy to have a day out there if you hire a car in Rosenheim.
