Regensburg is one of Germany's most historic and alluring cities. Situated in Bavaria, to the west of the Bavarian Forest, Regensburg has nearly 1, UNESCO listed buildings scattered throughout its Old Town centre. Features like the Stone Bridge and St Peter's Cathedral provide a picture postcard setting for the city, but that's not to say that nightlife and cultural festivals aren't equally as forthcoming; Regensburg has a huge density of bars per square metre. Car hire in Regensburg is popular in order to explore the wider Bavarian countryside, with the likes of Lohberg due east. Hiring a car in Regensburg is available from the city centre pickup-point.
The picture postcard view of Regensburg is of the Stone Bridge crossing the Danube and heading up towards St Peter's Cathedral. The city at night is one of Germany's most beautiful and atmospheric images, with the UNESCO listed Old-Town romantically lit, and café and bar culture in full swing. The Thurn and Taxis Palace, the Walhalla Temple, and the Old Town Hall constitute a small section of the city's proudest monuments. Hiring a car in Regensburg is recommended as you can spend the day exploring the Bavarian Forest, which reaches out towards the Czech border, and the night relaxing in Regensburg.
A 90-minute car journey east on the B16 will take you to Lohberg in the Bavarian Forest where you can enjoy the pleasant lakes scenery. For a taste of the big city, the A3 takes you north to Nuremburg, around a 70-minute drive, but follow the road in its south-easterly direction and you'll arrive at the town of Passau where St Stephen's Cathedral looms over the Danube; if you like Regensburg, you'll defiantly enjoy Passau. The A93/A9 takes you to Munich in about 70 minutes where you can visit Marienplatz and enjoy a similar café culture to Regensburg - but on a bigger more cosmopolitan scale.
