Kiel is one of most northern Germany cities, with prime access to the Baltic Sea. The city has a proud maritime heritage, recognised by the huge Laboe Naval Memorial, and remaining strong to this day with events like Kiel Week – the biggest sailing meet in the world. Kiel is a modern city with plenty of shopping facilities, particularly on Holstenstraße and Holtenauer Straße.
It should be noted that the attractions in the city are quite widespread so car hire would be something to seriously consider. This also gives you the freedom to visit neighbouring Hamburg, which is just over an hour away.
Some tourists will be visiting for Kiel Week, others because it is one of Europe's major travel hubs. There are plenty of modern amenities and brand name shops on Holstenstraße and Dansiche Strasse, so your shopping needs are well catered for. A stroll along the banks of the Kiel Canal is advised, and the Kiel theatre scene is particularly vibrant if performing arts are your thing, so consider catching a show. For a break from the city, visit the much-loved Kiel Botanical Gardens.
If you're hiring a car, don't miss a trip up the coast to Laboe where you can visit the Naval Memorial and U-Boat 995 which stands alongside it.
