A big, bold city boasting a multitude of exciting things to do and fascinating places to visit, Hamburg is a good mix of sophisticated nightlife, compelling history, and prolific commerce. Hiring a car in Hamburg lets you see exactly what this excellent destination has in store, so strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.
Head to market
As a city of traders, Hamburg has more than its fair share of bustling, eclectic markets. Amongst a veritable smorgasbord of flea, food and bric-a-brac markets there are a few favourites.
The Fischmarkt on the River Elbe attracts around 70,000 visitors on a Sunday morning. Here, you can expect to find everything you could ever want – fresh fish, flowers, meat and much more. Once you’re done exploring the stalls, stop by the Fish Auction Hall and check out the live bands playing everything from jazz to rock music.
If the weather’s bright, how about a trip to the open air Isemarkt in the arches of the Metro? You’ll find 200 sellers setting up their stalls along this 1km stretch. Pick up exotic spices, indulge in baked goods or treat yourself to some unique decorations for your home – with so much on offer here, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Bridge the gap
Hamburg is said to have the most bridges of any city in the entire world – around 2,500. But, if you don’t have time to cross them all, make sure you pay a visit to the Köhlbrandbrücke. Built in the 1970s, this 4km bridge sweeps dramatically across Hamburg’s harbour, affording those who cross it excellent views.
For something a little more traditional, seek out the famous Poggenmühlenbrücke. Located in the Speicherstadt warehouse district, this is a magical bridge in enchanting surroundings – making for the perfect photo.
The churches of Hamburg
One of the defining features of Hamburg’s varied skyline is the copper-green dome of St Michaeliskirche, an 18th century baroque church. Built to hold congregations of up to 2,500, St Michaeliskirche’s stunning white and gold stucco interior is worth a visit. You can even take a trip up the tower for breathtaking views across the city.
The natural choice
Escape urban life with a visit to the famous Planten un Blomen. As well as botanical gardens and Europe’s largest Japanese garden, this fabulous attraction offers pony rides, tea ceremonies, a sweet smelling rose garden and water light shows.
If you’re travelling with children or if you’re an animal lover yourself, the Tierpark Hagenbeck zoo is another great choice for a day trip. One of the first ‘open zoos’ ever built, with animals moving around freely, this place is home to a huge herd of elephants, amongst other beautiful animals.
