Erkelenz is the largest town in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, found in the west of Germany. Surrounded by rolling countryside, the north of the town leads towards forests and waterways. In the east part of the region you'll find the source of the River Niers. The west is home to the Ruhr Valley with the land lowering 30-60 metres, and in the south the land gradually rises up to the Jackerath loess ridge.
Hiring a car in Erkelenz enables you to travel further afield from this peaceful town. The Bundesautobahn 46 and Bundesautobahn 61 provide great motorway links to the rest of the country.
Rent a car from Erkelenz and drive south-east of the town to Lövenich, to visit the Rhineland Fire Brigade Museum. The museum is housed in an old land machine factory, which is a listed monument. Here you can view a collection of historic tools and firefighting equipment. There's a collection of classic fire brigade vehicles to admire, and for children there is even a large wooden fire brigade car they can play with. Amongst all the attractions and landmarks in the area, you'll also notice the historic architecture dotted around the region.
