Parthenay is an old fortified town in the Deux Sevres department of the Poitou Charentes region in the West of France. Two sides of the town are surrounded by the River Thouet. Hiring a car in Parthenay allows visitors to freely travel around the area. A popular place to visit is the town's medieval centre which is home to the Saint Jacque Gate and Bridge to the north. A sight to see in the centre of the town is the Eglise Saint-Laurent church which has both Romanesque and gothic features. It is believed to date back as early as the 11th century and has been rebuilt several times.
You cannot visit Parthenay without exploring the rest of the Poitou Charentes region. Hiring a car in Parthenay from our branch at Boulevard Georges Clemenceau makes travelling the 90km to Chateau de Cherveux easy. This medieval castle was built between the 12th and 14th century and is often called the ‘Scottish castle in France' due to the fact that reconstruction work was carried out by a Scotsman. See if you can spot the Scottish flag that still flies here. Take the time to admire the impressive gothic stonework and the remarkable carpentry whilst your there too.
