Chateauroux is the capital of the Indre department of central France. Chateauroux's character is defined by the lush green banks of the Indre River, the imposing Château Raoul, the extensive list of public gardens, and the town's array of modern amenities; buildings such as the spaceship-like Equinoxe contrast dramatically with structures like St Andrew's Church. Hiring a car from Chateauroux means you can venture to the nearby castles, as well the Chateauroux Forest to the south and the national parklands of Parc Naturel Régional de la Brenne, which lie to the west.
Chateauroux is a lovely town to explore and relax in. The Prairie Saint-Gildas and the Parc de la Préfecture mark out either side of the banks of the Indre. Take the Avenue du Pont Neuf venturing towards Château Raoul and stroll through the contrasting architecture of the town – the futuristic Equinoxe building is particularly striking.
The Loire Valley and quaint villages like Argenton-sur-Creuse are a short drive south on the A20; or alternatively, you can rent a car from Chateauroux and head for the enchanting Château Valençay on the D956 north.
