Nestled in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France, Airvault is a small town that is popular with tourists looking for a quiet, relaxing break in the French countryside. The town is incredibly historic, having been the venue for two major battles – The first was in 732AD; during the second in 1356AD, the city was the location for a vital victory for the English in the 100 Years' War. With a popular campsite on the outskirts of the town, many visitors to the region hire a car from Airvault to explore the historic region, as well as the stunning countryside of Deux-Sevres.
Airvault's biggest attraction is perhaps the Saint Pierre church. Built in 975 AD by Aldéarde, the wife of Viscount Herbert I of Thouars, the church is the town's most prominent landmark. The Abbey, close to the church, and the castle that overlooks much of the town are also popular landmarks. Surrounding the town of Airvault are the towns of Bressuire, Loudun, Parthenay and the city of Poitiers, all of these are well worth exploring if you do choose to hire a car from Airvault. The roads between these towns cut through some stunning countryside and Poitiers is particularly picturesque. Should you wish to visit further afield, the Parc naturel régional de la Brenne is around 1 hour 45 minutes away by car.
