The town of Lohja stands roughly 4 miles west of Helsinki in south-western Finland, which means that visitors who hire a car in Lohja can drive to the capital in an hour. The surrounding area is dominated by Lohjanjärvi Lake and the hills of the Lohja Ridge. One of the highlights is Lohjansaari Island, which features an orchard of thousands of apple trees providing some stunning scenery. Nearby, the Fruticetum Gardens feature more than 3 different species of apple and hundreds of other fruit species. Look out too for Kovela Manor, which has a museum of extraordinary old Finnish agricultural machinery.
Lohja is a leafy modern town with a rich history as a trading post and a centre for horticulture. There's a mix of modern architecture, like the striking library, and the old, like the 15th-century gothic church of St Lawrence, one of the town's main attractions. With your Lohja car rental it's easy to tour all the local sights. The best known is the Tytyri Mine Museum, where visitors can take old limestone mine wagons to see displays 300ft underground. The town also has a local history and culture museum, a golf course and an attractive lakeside waterfront with a floating restaurant. Families can also try the Neidonkeidas water park and spa centre.
