The city of Uberlandia stands in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais, 36 miles north of Sao Paulo (via the BR-5 highway) and 35 miles west of Belo Horizonte. This region, between the Paranaíba and Grande rivers is one of the richest farming areas in the country. The city's name means 'fertile land'. If you hire a car in Uberlandia you'll easily be able to tour the surrounding area. The transport links are excellent: Uberlandia accesses eight major highways and a railway, and César Bombonato Airport is just six miles from the city centre. Nearby visitor attractions include Represa do Miranda reservoir and the nature park at El Cerrado.
It's worth getting a hire car in the university city of Uberlandia to tour all the attractions. The highlights of the city include the ornate yellow-painted Casa de la Cultura, which is a lively arts centre, and the modern Municipal Market, a great place to investigate local food specialties like Brazilian cheeses and sweets made from local fruit. Tucked away inside the Market is a small art gallery too. Elsewhere in Uberlandia you'll find the Parque do Sabia, a massive 450-acre lush area of woods and greenery, with man-made lakes and beaches, a zoo and aquarium.
