Based in the north east of Brazil, São Luís is out on the peak of the country's coastline. Hire a car in São Luís and you will be able to explore the stunning landscapes of Maranhão, which include lush rainforests and the stunning dune fields of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. There are plenty of museums to soak up the culture of the area, the Cafua das Mercãs and Museu Histórico e Artístico do Estado de Maranhão being just two of the historical highlights. There are also plenty of beautiful beaches to explore along the coastline. Just flit between resorts or relax on the white sands.
The Palácio dos Leões is a beautiful building to see while you're in the area. Situated right on the coastline, this former state governor's palace is bursting with valuable antiques and art, it's open on afternoons from Wednesday to Sunday and well worth heading along to if you plan to hire a car in São Luís. Based just behind it is the Casa das Tulhas, a market dating back to the 19th century that now provides various foods and craft stalls daily, a great place to find souvenirs or to try local delicacies and flavours.
