The Brazilian city of Cotia stands in the mountains to the west of São Paulo but is now almost joined to the gigantic metropolis. São Paulo's centre is only about 2 miles to the east. This means that if you hire a car in Cotia you'll be able to explore the valleys and mountains surrounding it. These include major urban attractions like the Museum of Art, Ibirapuera Park, Paulista Avenue and the Theatro Municipal. In the opposite direction, you'll find the lush Morro Grande Forest Reserve that is a beloved escape for São Paulo city dwellers.
In Cotia itself you'll be able to see some of the original 17th-century settlers' homes that have been carefully preserved. You'll soon find that there are plenty of hills, valleys and the Cotia River itself to explore. Look out for the spectacular Zu Lai Buddhist temple and the impressive International Karting Circuit. The pretty Roselãndia Gardens are a popular relaxing retreat for Sao Paulo citizens and the Japanese Square demonstrates the city's links with the Orient. Other highlights include the popular Pet Zoo and the upmarket shops and homes of the Granja Viana suburb.
