The international airport at Campo Grande serves the capital of the Mato Grosso do Sul state of Brazil. The centre of the city of Campo Grande itself is just three miles east from the airport, which confusingly is sometimes referred to locally by the name of the area where it stands: ‘Antônio João Airport'. Its two runways are shared with the neighbouring army and air force bases. If you hire a car at Campo Grande Airport you'll soon note that there's open and covered car parking right alongside the large passenger terminal and the Avenue Duque de Caxias leads straight from the airport towards the centre.
Campo Grande is a modern city of wide tree-lined avenues and tower blocks, interspersed with green parks and public squares. If you hire a car at the airport you can easily explore. It's at the centre of a state highway network that can lead west to Bolivia and Paraguay. In the city itself there are four universities so expect to find plenty of lively student nightlife. The tourist highlights include the Aquario do Pantanal aquarium, the bustling central market with glimpses of the influence of the city's Japanese community and the impressive modern Dom Bosco Museum, which includes a collection of more than 10,000 insects.
