Unlike many wooden coasters, Hades has a 360-degree roll which is sure to test even the hardiest of roller coaster fiends. Built in 2005, the Hades ride features a drop of 140 feet, and is one of the heart-stopping highlights of an already exciting theme park. It also boasts one of the longest underground tunnels in the world. (Image credit: Royalbroil)

Aptly enough for its name, Millennium Force at the Cedar Point park was opened to the public in the year 2000. Such is its relative size and speed compared to other coasters, it was the first to be named a ‘giga coaster’ – as it exceeds a height of 300 feet. Its top speed approaches 100mph and it allows for stunning views of Lake Erie which runs parallel. (Image credit: Jeremy Thompson)

Millennium Force isn’t the only roller coaster offering amazing views of the Great Lake – the Ravine Flyer II is another thrill ride with a scenic edge. Here you’ll ascend 120 feet in the air for a quick glimpse, before the ride takes you down and around its 3,000 feet of track. With multiple awards under its belt, Ravine Flyer II is an absolute smash. (Image credit: daveynin)

Unusually for a roller coaster, the Phantom has his revenge on the second drop of the ride, which is steeper than the first due to the hilly terrain on which the park was built. The ‘Revenge’ part of the name was given to the ride as it replaced the Steel Phantom, and due to the various improvements which would wreak havoc on many an innocent rider.

With a track length in excess of 1,200 metres, the Banshee at Kings Island, Ohio, is the world’s longest inverted coaster. While most coasters reach their top speeds at the first drop, the unique lay of the land around Banshee is such that the speed maxes out at around the halfway point of the ride, for an additional thrill. The fun begins before you even get on the ride, as the three floors of the station at The Voyage are made to resemble the different parts of an intrepid ship. With a Golden Ticket award given for five years running, and a total approaching 25 seconds of air time along its 6,400 feet of track, The Voyage is one of the Midwest’s very best.

Named after the nearby mountain in Smoky Mountains National Park, Thunderhead has been dubbed one of the Golden Ticket Awards’ top five wooden coasters for all but one year since its construction. With more than 20 turns and over 30 crossovers, it’s also notable for its mid-ride fly back through the station, to give those waiting an extra dose of excitement. (Image credit: Coasterman1234)

As the thrill-seekers’ highlight of Six Flags Over Georgia, the Goliath ride hits 4 Gs of full force during its 4,480 feet. As the coaster swirls down the drain into a 540-degree helix, you’ll also get plenty of airtime before hitting a series of bunny hops designed to keep you on your toes. Goliath reaches 70mph during its run, ensuring a hair-raising ride throughout. (Image credit: Coasterman1234)

Carowinds’ main attraction is so intense, they put it in the name – with a drop of 325 feet at 81 degrees, this giga coaster is among the tallest and fastest in the world, reaching 95mph during its reign of terror. It’s taller than the Statue of Liberty and packs many twists and turns including a fast-paced horseshoe turn more than 150 feet in the air.

With a full 26 of its roughly 135 seconds out on the rails, Apollo’s Chariot will have you feeling the rush for approximately one-fifth of the entire ride while you coast over its eight airtime hills. As one of the most popular parks on our route, you’re advised to get there early if you want to experience the ride of Apollo – almost 5,000 feet of thrills and hills. (Image credit: Piotrus)

Imagine trying to tame El Toro - ‘The Bull’ truly lives up to its name, as the wooden coaster takes a series of sharp turns over the course of its 4,400 feet of track. Consistently voted among the Golden Ticket’s favourite wooden coasters, El Toro hits 70mph from the very first drop – and in terms of airtime, is hard to beat. (Image credit: Paulm27)
